May 3-8, 2008: American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting, Washington, D.C.
On Monday, May 5, Judith Cohen, M.D. will present the course proposal "The Basics of Disaster Psychiatry" at the 161st Annual Meeting of the APA. With disasters seemingly on the rise, mental health risks of disaster events continue to be of significant concern in this country. When disasters strike, psychiatrists can provide assistance in post-disaster settings but unfortunately, their role has not been clarified nor well utilized.
At the end of this course, attendees should be able to define disaster mental health, identify practical clinical interventions in response to disaster, discuss management strategies for post-disaster PTSD and other mental health conditions, and assess individuals exposed to disasters, among other objectives.
The course level is basic, requiring no prior knowledge or experience in this area.
